VR and Filmed Content Director
After graduating from Bournemouth Film School, Simon began his career creating media for live events before co-founding his first interactive design agency which, among other achievements, won the British Interactive Media Association award for innovation and in 2008 delivered a major, touring immersive experience featuring Virtual Reality for the British Army.
In 2009, Simon founded Figment Productions, delivering computer graphics, audio-visual and interactive projects for numerous high-profile clients around the world including Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Merlin Entertainments, Universal Studios, and a variety of museums and heritage attractions. Along the way, their projects have won numerous awards, including the prestigious THEA award for best immersive attraction, and the team has worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment including LEGO, Harry Potter, Star Wars and The Beatles.
Figment’s work sits at the intersection of media production and technology innovation. Recent projects have included projection mapping, 4D theatre shows and dome shows for iconic locations such as the Mary Rose Museum and the Silverstone Experience; an immersive, interactive maze where guests’ identities merge into the media (Black Mirror for Thorpe Park); computer animation for flying theatres and simulators (Cartoon Network’s Ben 10); and the opening of the 2021 BAFTAs ceremony featuring a live broadcast Augmented Reality performance and on-stage hologram.
However, many people know Figment for its VR work. In 2016, Simon led the team to become pioneers in the use of VR for large-scale, location-based projects, providing millions of people with their first taste of VR, often delivered with new, innovative technologies in a theatrical setting. Projects have included Derren Brown’s Ghost Train at Thorpe Park, The Great LEGO Race VR at LEGOLAND parks around the world, Galactica at Alton Towers and Kraken Unleashed VR at SeaWorld Orlando.
Figment’s first VR short film premiered at the prestigious SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival in 2018 and, in 2021, Figment partnered with the Royal Opera House to deliver ground-breaking hyper-reality opera experience ‘Current, Rising’ which won the VR Award for “Out-of-Home VR Experience of the Year”.
